There are now more than 20 Welsh vineyards covering approximately 30 hectares.

Increasingly, these producers need to respond to consumer demand for wine which meets environmental and ethical criteria. There are also good business reasons to take new look at how the Welsh vineyards can meet the challenges of a changing world.

In South East Wales a number of vineyards have come together to respond to this, forming the Sustainable Welsh Wine Group.

With support from the Sustainable Supply Chains (SSC) initiative, the vineyards have made a commitment to developing more sustainable approaches to production.

This is work in development and each vineyard has committed to four generic principles: conserving and improving the natural environment, minimising resource use and reducing carbon emissions, building a Welsh identity, and working together.

See the Pledge (pdf file) which the participating vineyards have made, as a first step in this process.

For progress updates (until the final website is created) , please see the Wine Group's page on the SSC site.
